4th of July

I wrote this last year for a office newsletter, but i am quite happy with it so i wanted to repost this 4th. Have a great 4th of July

Enjoy!
-------------------------------------
When Avram sent out an email asking for peoples thoughts on the 4th of July I immediately knew I wanted to contribute something but as I sat to write I had trouble getting started. I didnt want to spew the same old clichés no matter how accurate they might be. The next instead of my usual lunch I decided to go to Eisenhower Park to read my book and enjoy the beautiful day. But as with so much in life, it didnt go as planned.

I ended up parking right in front of the Veterans Memorial and next to it a group of soldiers rehearsing a ceremony. As I went through the Memorial, I couldnt help but look over my shoulder. I didnt mean to but I just couldnt help it. Here standing in this beautiful memorial to those who have served so bravely for our country in the past, were those who, I imagine have just recently finished or are about to finish training to serve our country now.

Will people 50 years from now, sit and think about the sacrifices todays soldiers, sailors, marines and airman have made in Iraq, Afghanistan, in the War on Terror the way we do of those who fought so bravely in World War II. Or will they be looked down on as too many Vietnam Veterans are? Their sacrifices questioned because some believe the cause to not be legitimate.

Every man or woman, who has put on uniform, served our country with honor and courage is in my thoughts. And when I see the fireworks go off above the flag on the 4th of July, I am reminded that I am able to enjoy them in peace because of those who served.

Another one bites the dust

I was so excited for the start of this hockey season. I went to the Islanders Preseason Opener against the Rangers, they destroyed the Rangers. All was right in the world! And now this. Tuesday the Rangers clinched a playoff spot, Wednesday the Isles are eliminated. And Thursday they meet. And I almost don't even want to watch. In the 90s when I was used to them losing it was so heartbreaking for them to be eliminated. But now, it is absolutely devastating.

Delay

I just cannot get myself to worked up about this. I don't know if he is innocent or not. I know however that the preception is that he is guilty and thats all that will ever matter. The courts may vindicate him, but forever his name will be tarnished. It seems as if he is certainly guilty of bad judgement some where along the line, but wether or not that is criminal bad judgement seems at best to be a stretch. And now that he resigned he will, in the publics eye, be forever guilty. Does any one really think OJ is innocent cause the court found him not guilty? How about Michael Jackson? Robert Blake? The Smoke always matters more then the fire.

The Best French Joke and TV Spoilers

More and More the best Frenchman joke you make, is just to look at what they do. You don't even have to say anything. Just look at them, watch how they embarrass themselves. For a more indepth take on the rioting in France take a look here.

I used to look at spoilers for TV all the time but I have tried to stop that. However I did see a picture from an upcoming episode of the West Wing. Now its no shock to anyone that as John Spencer died, so follows Leo McGarry. The picture I saw was several cast memembers as pall barrers at Leos funeral. It was one of the saddest pictures Ive seen from a tv show. Mainly cause of the true life lose of John Spencer.

Vacation

Ignoring the obvious problem that I have no money to spend on a vacation, I am still trying to plan a get way in first 2 weeks of July. People keep suggesting that I go on a cruise. It sounds like a excellent idea to me, relaxing, I love boats, it would be a real getaway.

Ive also thought about just getting in my car and going. I discovered this neat bridge-tunnel thing in Virginia. Ive thought about going down there just to cross it, check out the area, stop by DC on the way back, do all the touristy stuff I should have done when I interned there.

The driving idea has the drawback of not being relaxing, which is a vital part of this trip. The cruise has the drawback of costing a lot (doing my best to ignore that part). Decisions, decisions, decisions.

Mexican Flag

I got a question for all the people waving the Mexican flag at these Criminal Immigration protests (i prefer criminal to illegal, because after all thats what were talking about. Criminals, they broke the laws of the United States in the manner in which they entered it). If they are so proud of their Mexican heritage, why aren't they still there? If Mexico means so much more to you then the U.S., if you proud of Mexico, why did you leave there? Obviously it is because their is more opportunity for you and your children here.

I have no problem with legal immigration. It is backbone of this country. But if your're first act in this country is to break its laws, then as unPC as it is to say I have no choice but to say, Go Home!
